This morning I was reading an entry on a blog that I visit often and the writer was reflecting on the fact that she had been blogging for 5 years. It made me think about when I first started this blog. I went into my archives and saw that I had missed the four-year birthday of urbanmamasong by a couple of weeks. January 17, 2010 marked four years of blogging!!! But I need to give a little bit of history. Urbanmamasong.com didn’t begin as urbanmamasong.com. It has gone through some changes over these past four years, first starting off as “Gabrillawrites.blogspot.com” then urbanmamasong.blogspot.com, then as time, circumstances, artistry and a sense of focus came into play, I decided to change the name of my blog to both simplify and be more in alignment with where I was and where I am going. Simply put, I live in the city, I’m a mama and I create music. Another way that I interpret urbanmamasong is being a mama, living in the city proclaiming/singing…life…love… the joys and challenges of mamahood...reflecting... creating...sharing. I believe that a song is a medium that has the potential to heal. This blog has been and continues to be somewhat of an online song. It has also given me the ability to build community and share my musings and discoveries about life as an artist and mama and to connect with and support other mamas in the world.
As with any birthday, there is reflection and setting intentions for the next year. The irony is that many of my wishes and desires for urbanmamasong are the wishes that I have for myself:
- To be more constistent and committed in my aspirations.
- To set time asisde daily to nurture my creative inclinations.
- To build community with other mamas in the world.
- To be supported and supportive.
The number 17 has so much significance for me. 17 is the date of my son’s birth. My son and my blog, two creations that are integral and extremely important in my life. The birth of my son contributed to the creation of urbanmamasong and urbanmamasong feeds me in so many ways, allowing me to connect with other mothers, to be more present, and fulfilled so that being mama doesn't feel so overwhelming at times. In celebration of four years and in making new intentions for the next year of urbanmamasong.com, I have decided that on the 17th of each month, there will be a little something extra or as we say back home an “lil lagniappe.” So mark your calendar and make sure that you check in on the 17th of each month. Check back more often if you’re so inclined :)
